Padfield Community Spaces

Temple Street Community Garden is the 'green heart' of Padfield Village, that we manage on behalf of our community.

It was officially opened to the public on 14th June 2026 with a community event including storytelling, a painted stone hunt, and a smoothie bike! We were absolutely thrilled that our amazing community turned out in such great numbers to celebrate this village achievement.

Three very special people 'cut the ribbon' to officially open the site:

Our amazing Counsellor Ollie Cross, Director of POGS Sue Leeson and PCS Young Volunteer of the Year Arthur Tomlin.

We also revealed our new logo, inspired by the winning design from a competition held at our local Primary School. Winner Reuben Baker was there to help us reveal the new design.

Our small, local charity was created to transform an agricultural field at the centre of Padfield village for the use and benefit of the local community, in a sustainable relationship with the environment. We aim to maintain our 'green heart' in perpetuity for future generations.

June 2026 - We're open... with more exciting events on the way

Huge thanks to all our amazing residents and supporters who attended the Grand Opening of Temple Street Community Garden. It was an absolute joy and privilege for the Board to open this space for permanent use by the public, and to bring some fun at the same time.

We are hugely grateful to all the vendors and volunteers who provided time, effort and donations of goods and materials; including the Really Awesome Coffee van, Tesco Glossop for providing the ingredients for our free Smoothie Bike, loaned to us by Mike at Alternative Bikes, and Glossop Rocks for a series of beautifully painted stones which our visitors were able to find around the Garden and keep.

We were also pleased to have the opportunity to share the exciting news that PCS has successfully received a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund of over £17,000 which will allow us to provide (amongst other things) a Summer Programme of free events for our residents and visitors to kickstart their return to using this community space.

Watch out for more details soon!

May 2026 - New name and an opening celebration

We are thrilled to announce a new name for our site: Temple Street Community Garden. It's our hope that this encompasses both the history of the site and our ongoing commitment to maintaining a welcoming place for both people and wildlife to spend time together.

Even more exciting, it will soon be open for full-time public access.

On Sunday 14th June between from 1:30pm residents and friends are invited to join us at the Community Garden for its official opening. Expect games, refreshments and celebration for all ages.

Jan 2026 - Happy New Year - happy new field!

We hope you've had a fantastic festive season and a peaceful start to 2026.

The end of 2025 was super hectic as we hurried to fulfil the requirements of our grant from the UK Government's Community Ownership Fund. Throughout December, we hosted some short-notice workdays to clear rubbish and make space for the new boundary fence. Accessible kissing gates were also installed along with five new benches across the site.

It's been so exciting to see the field begin to take shape, in line with the plans created from residents ideas and wishes. We will be holding more workdays and volunteering opportunities as the new year progresses. Be sure to keep an eye here and on our social media, or subscribe to our newsletter, to be the first to hear about them.

November 2025 - Success! We purchased Temple Street Field!

After years of hard work, we are delighted to announce that we've successfully purchased Temple Street Field. It is a fantastic feeling to have achieved our initial goal of purchasing the land on behalf of the local community and future generations. Read our Chairperson's full statement.

Getting here has been a monumental effort by many members of our community and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to this success; with your enthusiasm, donations, ideas, feedback and positive planning-permission responses.

Over the next couple of months, activity will begin on the field, to make it safe for public use. Until these works are completed, access to the site will be on an ad-hoc basis, for PCS co-ordinated activities only. This is only a short term situation, and we look forward to opening the site fully at some point in 2026.

Preparatory works will include carrying out an initial site clearance, replacing the fence-line, and installing gates and benches. This may cause some initial disruption in the adjacent area and we are grateful for your patience as this work is carried out.

Be sure to follow us on Facebook, sign up to our newsletter and come along to upcoming events to stay up to date!

Jan 2025 - Good News! Funding Achieved

We are delighted to be one of eighty-five projects awarded funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s ‘Community Ownership Fund’. This funding will allow us to bring the area into community ownership, and begin managing the land for the enjoyment of local people and visitors, for generations to come. Read our press release here.
