About Padfield Community Spaces

Padfield Community Spaces CIO (PCS) was set up in January 2021 and incorporated in January 2022. Its primary aim is to purchase land in Padfield and maintain and improve it for both people and nature.

The charities initial efforts are concentrated on the purchase and development of Temple Street Field from POGS Ltd.

See our Background section for information on POGS and the initial purchase of the field.

PCS is governed by a small board of trustees made up of local residents and is assisted by a handful of other supporters. Collectively, we bring a wealth of experience from areas such as organisational governance, wildlife conservation, and events and communications. While PCS is a new charity, we have a wide breadth of skills available to achieve our ambitious aims.

The PCS Board meets every 1-3 months and also plans to hold regular members meetings in the near future.

Our Charitable Purposes

To advance the conservation, protection and improvement of the natural environment of the village of Padfield, in particular but not exclusively by securing and managing local green spaces within the village, with consideration and sympathy for the natural and cultural heritage of the area and in harmony with the character and nature of the village.

To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Padfield and the surrounding area the provision of local green spaces for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants.

Padfield Community Spaces is a CIO Charity No. 1197352.

Background

Padfield is a small village in High Peak, Derbyshire, on the west side of the Peak District National Park and near the town of Glossop. In September 2020, a field which forms part of the quirky ‘Padfield Green Triangle’ - a village landmark and green space at the heart of the Padfield conservation area - was put up for sale.

Villagers were very concerned that the land would not remain a green space if it was sold and wanted to protect it from development for the long term benefit of the village and visitors to the area.

In response, a holding company was swiftly formed as a legal vehicle to receive loans and/or donations from local supporters which were made to purchase the field.  A substantial amount of funding was raised by Padfield Open Green Spaces Ltd (POGS) and they successfully secured the field at auction in October 2020.

Since its inception, POGS was established to be a temporary holding company so that the field could be brought into community ownership, once the immediate issue of securing the land was achieved. This would be achieved by forming a second, charitable organisation that could access funding and hold the land in perpetuity.

Padfield Community Spaces is the result. It exists to purchase the land from POGS and then to make access and biodiversity improvements in collaboration with any Padfield resident who wishes to take part or have a say.
